Highvory

January is already gone and Original Dub Gathering is relatively late in early 2011. Yet it is associated with the sprawling King Dub Records that we now offer our first release of the year but also our first collaborative production. Sprawl because KDR is ubiquitous on the Web, both from his netlabel dedicated to Dub but also through its radio broadcasts on the Internet during which everyone can enjoy  Roots & Stepper quality selection.

Highvory is the result of this meeting. A compilation always dedicated to  Dub (for those arriving on the site for the first time) and more specifically Stepper, this style that has ravaged the  sound system nights for three decades. This thread is a rhythmic axis around which many variations of style. Sounds of « roots » to sample « ethno » each piece brings a story, an emotion of its own. Most of the artists come from France, but we are proud to celebrate the unexpected participation of Johnny Clarke on a riddim of Lord Hissayas without forgot LabFrequency from Italy and the brazilian Dubatack.

Dani ites – Spiral

8 novembre 2010
Post Image

Six months after the release of the  first album called Melody Roots on ODGProd,  the Barcelona’s Dani Ites is back with a new album called Spiral. Always with the same energy this release was recorded and mixed in the course of 2010.  The unflagging producer Dani is proposing once again a clever flashback into the 70’s. We noted a different job compared to treatment very « digital » part of the rhythm on Melody Roots, a lot more instrumental emphasis dresses Spiral accompanying each divinely celestial melody played on the melodica.

DDK vs ODG /2

6 octobre 2010
Post Image

Eighth release of the year 2010 and second maxi for the duo DDK & ODG. More than a year after the first shock simply titled Drydeck meets Ondubground, the two crews will revive their « duel » with remixes of this second component named Drydeck versus Ondubground. Critics had described as « fusion » the universe enveloping the first four tracks, the latter is no exception but tends to a completely different style dark enough …

Recall, Drydeck is an instrumental and electronic band from the Drôme (Fr) who builds originally a hybrid style of music as much as inspired dub and hiphop. Since 2007, DDK & ODG maintain a musical friendship and have repeatedly rub the same scenes. Despite the 600 km between the two groups, their visions of « contemporary dub » (in the broadest sense) have grown and they have emerged together. Tinged with kind of « melancholic hope », an « artistic anarchy », similarities between their productions are numerous, it seemed logical that this new maxi demonstrates that, DDK versus ODG is fully dedicated to this style that everyone will appointed from the first listen.

Ondubground – Rub up the right dub #1

22 septembre 2010
Post Image

New release proposed under a free download by the French dub band Ondubground on their netlabel: Original Dub Gathering. As their habit, the members of the group present on Rub up the right Dub a powerfull dub between UK stepper and dubstep. And continue also the series of remixes they launched in middle of this year. This time, after the wonderful Lola in dub, the band attacks some other Jamaican standarts form this same time: end of 1970’s, early 1980’s.
The result is really interesting and well made for 8 full tracks. It respect perfectly the the original sound. We can feel a strong work of research, of various techniques of remixing and remasterizing to show a comtempory vision of the roots and reggae music. We can feel too a work made with heart.[…]

Tiburk – Taste it right

30 juin 2010
Post Image

Ondubground – Lola

4 mai 2010
Post Image

In memory of the fabulous and genius Serge Gainsbourg, the French band Ondubground proposes a new net-EP on its label Original Dub Gathering. Actually, this production presents dub versions of of the song « Lola Rastaqouère » from the first album reggae of the master: « Aux armes et cætera ».
Simply titled « Lola », the maxi is composed of 4 versions of the song inna style heavy dub stepper & rub-a-dub with some special guest stars. An EP clearly intended to sound system and dance-floor.
In fact, the EP is a bit realised such as maxi vinyl with two parts. The first track is the rub-a-dub version of the song. A sound stepper with a heavy bass line and the best choice of MC’s with Biga*Ranx and the legend Joseph Cotton. Plus Massa and Bongo Ben from the ODG’s crew.
This version is followed by an excellent dub version and a guest at the saxophone: Mael Cageron. On this second track, a kind of duel between saxophone and melodica is proposed. At least 5 stars (of 5) for this remarkable version.
The two last tracks, that is the second part for me, is the dub versions signed by FredDread a.k.a Webcam Hi-Fi. He adds his own vintage touch to the ODG version of the song. Inna style a bit coolest but still so powerful.

Panda dub – Black bamboo

11 mars 2010
Post Image

The last one is a new release realized by Panda dubBlack Bamboo. The second production of this young French producer on ODG.
As on his first publication, Panda dub presents a dub which is influenced by various kind of musics. The main sound is based on a dub at the same time steppa and electro. We can say the electro-dub influence is more developed on this new production than his previous release. In end, the producer find the good balance between dub stepper and novo-dub. The novo side accentuated by the samples from Ethnic musics and some tones very electro.
Will feel also the influence of some other music makers who are not especially dub producers. Per example, a track remember a famous composition of Yann Tiersen. As well as some others remind us music of various dub master such as the band Improvisators dub. By the way, a track in memory of Manutension, who disappeared the last year and founder of this band, is proposed by Panda dub. Nice.
So, a nice release of 10 tracks distributed for free under a Creative Commons license… don’t hesitate to share it.
